Get something real in your hands early, so the expensive decisions are made with evidence.
A prototype is an instrument for answering a question, not a demonstration that the project is going well. The most useful ones are often ugly, built in a day, and designed to test the single assumption most likely to sink the product.
So the first thing we ask is what the prototype is for. Proving a mechanism works is a different build from proving the product feels right in the hand, which is different again from something you can put in front of an investor. Trying to do all three in one part usually produces something that does none of them well and costs more than doing them separately.
We use 3D printing, CNC, and electronics builds depending on what is being tested, and we expect to iterate — the first version exists to be wrong in a specific, informative way. Physical evidence early is dramatically cheaper than discovering the same thing after tooling.
